CHSEP Full-Time Student Policy

Background

The original, award-winning online Certificate in Health, Safety and Environmental Processes (CHSEP) program was designed to meet the demands of working adults, struggling to balance work/family/life/study needs. However, more and more applicants are seeking support to complete CHSEP as full-time students.

CHSEP's instructional design is 'asynchronous', which means students can register, begin and complete studies at any point in the calendar year, based on their own unique learning style and competing demands. One accommodation for some learners is that all CHSEP content can be downloaded and printed, thus enabling students to interact with hard copy materials independent of time logged on.

For that reason, it is extremely difficult to state with precision how much time any particular student is spending studying online. However, based on our experience with thousands of students, we are confident the following guidelines will accommodate the majority of all full-time CHSEP students:

  • Minimum 20, maximum 30 hours per week. This range reflects differences in learning styles, possible prior familiarity with some content, and the option some students take to 'drill down' more deeply in to content through links embedded within the content. These links do not represent material to be formally assessed (ie, pass/fail) but are an important learning adjunct for many adults.

  • Total of 8 months to complete both Levels. Most adult learners will be able to complete the Foundations Level within 3 months, based on the schedule above. The Advanced Level includes a Guided Practicum component, where the student demonstrates some practical application of CHSEP studies in a project of importance to them, an employer, or industry group. Many students in vocational transition find this to be an invaluable tool in finding employment in the field. Full time students will find that 5 months is more than enough time to complete the Advanced Level course requirements, and do a credible job with their Guided Practicum.
